When to choose a CNG forklift

There are lots of things to consider when you are choosing the right forklift for your application. One of the first decisions you must make is what type of power your lift truck will run on…electric, LP (liquid propane), CNG (compressed natural gas), gasoline, or diesel.

While we will discuss the other types of power in separate blog posts, this article focuses on CNG (compressed natural gas) forklifts.

CNG-powered forklifts can be used indoors or outdoors.

Advantages:

  • Environmentally friendly: Because CNG  produces fewer emissions, CNG is better for the environment and for overall air quality. In fact, in the event of a leak, the natural gas dissipates into the air as water vapor and carbon dioxide.
  • Easy fuel refill – Unlike LP forklifts, the CNG tank is never removed. Instead, it is simply refilled, which can reduce downtime and operator strain.

Disadvantages:

  • Appropriate filling equipment can be challenging: Creating a CNG refueling stations can be expensive due to the large amount of land required and the general cost of equipment, installation, and infrastructure. This can be prohibitive in addition to other challenges such as obtaining proper permits and having an adequate natural gas supply.
